Strength Q&A: Weight training for runners
QUESTION:
I am a recent mother looking to get back into shape. I am training for a
1/2 marathon, but running 5 days/week is hard on my joints. (especially because I have 15 more pounds to lose). Can you recommend any weight-based workouts or cardio machines that will help supplement my running and take the load of my knees a few days per week?
ANSWER
Hello and thank you for your question. Using different training modalities or cross training is a great way to work around overuse problems such as you are experiencing. The weight based workouts in the Get An Edge system are great for providing a strength component to your training. The 2 day program would be perfect to help you with your 1/2 marathon goal. You could also choose additional aerobic exercises such as the elliptical machine and even spending some of your weekly aerobic time on a recumbent or upright exercise bike. These machines will help to reduce the pounding to your knees while maintaining and developing your aerobic conditioning.
